MERCEDES MARTINEZ
Mercedes Martinez is arguably one of the very best female wrestlers in New England. She was impressed early on by the athleticism and entertainment that wrestling brought to its fans. She says, “Wrestling always brought a smile to my face and I thought why can’t I do the same for someone out there. It was a challenge and I decided to take it.” Bret Hart was Mercedes’ inspiration to become a wrestler. His technical ability and his overall work ethic impressed her and she says she hopes to someday be as good as him. She describes his Iron Man match against Shawn Micheals as her favorite match of all time because it showed that wrestling was not just “sports entertainment” but that wrestlers are athletes as well. Mercedes was trained at the Power Station in Waterbury, CT by Jason Knight. Her first match was against a male and she beat him with a tope rope crossbody. “The match was in my hometown and I was scared and nervous. But once I heard my music, my adrenaline pumped and I was zoned into the match.” Mercedes lists Sumie Sakai from Japan as her toughest opponent. “She may be small but she has all the quick moves that tend to surprise me in every match I have against her.” Mercedes describes winning the first ever NECW North American Women’s Championship as the highlight of her career. She defeated Sumie Sakai for the title, which was also her first competition against someone from a different country. Outside of wrestling Mercedes enjoys basketball, playing video games, and softball. In her spare time, she likes playing basketball, listening to mainly hip hop and R&B music, and partying. She would one day like to become a police officer, which was always one of her goals in life, along with playing professional basketball and wrestling. She went to college on a basketball scholarship but an injury cut her dream of playing pro ball short. However Mercedes appears to have a long and great future ahead of her in NECW, a company that she describes as “going in the right direction to perfection.” - Kristina Altieri
